Welcome the baby; see the parents too

A new baby card can be short. You can welcome the child, tell the parents you are thinking of them, and offer one concrete kindness. There is no need to promise that every moment will be magical or to give advice about sleep, feeding, or recovery.

To close friends

“Welcome, little one. You have already brought so much joy into the room. We are thinking of all three of you and would love to bring dinner next week — no visit needed unless you want one.”

Only offer help you can actually give. A specific meal or errand means more than “let me know if you need anything.”

To a colleague

“Congratulations on your new arrival. Wishing you and your family some quiet time to get to know one another. We are happy for you and look forward to hearing from you whenever you are ready.”

Keep the note kind and leave work updates out of it. If you are signing a team card, let everyone add a short line rather than speaking for the family.

To grandparents or the wider family

“What a lovely new person to welcome into the family. I hope there are many unhurried afternoons together and plenty of photos to look back on. Congratulations to all of you.”

If you know the baby's name and the family has shared it publicly, use it. Otherwise “your little one” is perfectly warm.

Make the card easy to keep

Choose a new baby card with space for a name or one first photo. Check that the photo is one the parents are comfortable sharing. The message can be simple: welcome, one real detail, and a wish for the days ahead.
